What is MRSA and What Does MRSA Look Like?
What is MRSA?
MRSA, short for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is a type of staph bacterial infection that can affect any part of the human body through a skin injury such as scrapes, cuts, bites, or any open wound.
Staph bacteria are commonly found throughout our bodies, with 1 out of 3 individuals carrying staph bacteria in their noses. However, staph bacteria can be problematic when the bacteria enter the body through an open wound causing serious infection or pneumonia.
MRSA can become dangerous when contracted into an open wound because it is resistant to most common antibiotics making it more difficult to treat.
How do I know if I have MRSA?
The symptoms of MRSA vary depending on where you are infected. If you have a skin wound that doesn’t seem to get better over time, you may have MRSA.
Common MRSA symptoms include lesions (sores) with inflammation, redness, swelling, and clusters of pus-filled blisters, along with excess pain, fever, fatigue, and chest pains. If you have any of these symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately, where a doctor can sample the infected area and test for confirmation.
How did I get MRSA?
MRSA is contracted through physical contact or from touching objects carrying the bacteria. MRSA infections are most likely to affect people with weakened immune systems or those who have recently had a surgical procedure.
Common places where people contract MRSA :
· Hospitals
· Salons & Spas
· Adult nursing homes
